ARE YOU THINKING OF QUITTING YOUR SEWING BUSINESS?
In our last article we discussed some of the ways we may be affected by the ups and
downs of the sewing business or any service business, which the sewing business is. If
haven't seen that article yet please see the previous article.
We suggested that the first order of things should be to simply take some time off from
the pressures of your sewing business.
In many cases, we find that we were simply trying too hard or working too much and are
overworked and over stressed, so taking some time off from our sewing business is a
workable solution.
Re Charging your batteries sometimes is all we need to look at things with a new
attitude and an optimistic eye toward our sewing business.
However, if you've already done that only to come back to the same problems and those
problems are really causing you to seriously think about quitting your sewing business
or wishing you were in
a different business, then read on, we do have some solutions for you.
Before we get that though, we just want to remind you that running a sewing business
or any service business requires that we have our personal life in order, meaning if
there are
other pressures in your life it may make it more difficult to rise out of this dilemma.

So I encourage you to do what you can to alleviate those stresses.

Moving on: The first order of things now is going to be your sewing business business
analytics.
What you want to do is make a record and hopefully you already have been keeping
receipts, but make a record of each and every customer you have.
Now if you're not already marking your receipts every time you get a difficult customer
then I urge you to do it starting right now.
Make notes on the receipt corresponding to that customer.
Did she want a refund? Did you refund the customer? What was the complaint?
Was it about delivery? Was it about the sewing?
So make notes on every customer interaction, it could be as simple as going back
through your receipts and adding those notes, or just starting to take those notes now.
Of course this requires you to be keeping receipts in the first place, but these are not
just receipts, they are bill of sale, and so they need to have the details about the order.
The size of the order, the color, the garment, what was the complaint, you may also do
this on computer.
GOOD SEWING BUSINESS HABITS
What you will do next is go through a period of time in the history of your transactions,
and if you already have that history you can do that now, if not, you can start brand new.
This is good business habit and it is just as good for your small home sewing business
or even a large sewing business, any sewing business or service business should be
doing all of these things already and if not already then start immediately.
This will allow you to go back into your records and look at every single one of your
complaints and you will be looking for a pattern.

Not a sewing pattern, but a pattern regarding what type of customer or what type of
complaint and looking for some kind of pattern.
Were most of the complaints about sizing? Were they about color?
Were they about delivery? Or the type of garment?
You see the point, you will need to ferret out what is causing the consternation in your
sewing business.
Once you find the pattern causing the problem in your sewing service business, you can
begin to eliminate that type of situation that brings that type of pain in your day.
Yes you may have to decline certain jobs or certain customers but let me tell you that
you will feel like a huge weight has been lifted from your back and shoulders and
running a sewing business and eliminating all those problem situations will make your
life so much more peaceful and the joy will return in your life and your sewing business.
